(ATR) The Birmingham 2021 World Games organizing committee has a new chief executive officer well versed in multi-sport events.
DJ Mackovets has helped organize premier events such as the NFL’s Super Bowl, the NCAA’s Final Four, Atlanta’s 1996 Centennial Olympic Games and the U.S. Figure Skating Championships.
"This will be the eighth multi-sport event I have worked with so best practices from all will help us set a foundation for success in Birmingham," Mackovets tells Around the Rings.
"My early role with [Atlanta Committee for the Olympic Games] in Atlanta was non-Athens soccer venues so I spent a great deal of time in Birmingham," he adds. "Today, this city is a thriving reinvigorated community with tremendous civic pride and a real "get it done" attitude."
Mackovets will work side by side with Birmingham 2021 chairman Jonathan Porter who says Mackovets’ previous experience makes him overqualified for the position.
"His talents and expertise have been displayed on the world stage and we are very pleased to bring him on board," Porter said in a statement.
Mackovets attributes his success to great teachers.
"In our country, the Super Bowl and Final Four are two of the best managed annual events," Mackovets tells ATR. "I learned from the very best working with Jim Steeg and Bill Hancock about integrated planning and communications!"
The Birmingham 2021 World Games will be the second held in the United States following the inaugural edition of the event in Santa Clara, California in 1981. This year’s edition of the World Games will take place in Wroclaw, Poland from July 20-30.
