(ATR) The 2010 Commonwealth Games have recorded a first positive drug test.
Nigerian Oludamola Osayomi, who won gold Thursday in the women’s 100m, tested positive for the stimulant methylhexaneamine. It’s the second controversy from the race. Australian Sally Pearson finished first but was disqualified for a false start.
Osayomi appeared Monday in a hearing involving Commonwealth Games Federation president Michael Fennell, lawyers and World Anti-Doping Agency observers. The sprinter remains provisionally suspended until her "B" sample is tested. Results are expected Wednesday at the earliest.
If she is disqualified, Natasha Myers of St. Vincent and the Grenadines would be given the gold, Katherine Endicott of England the silver and Bertille Atangana of Cameroon the bronze.
"Any positive test, whether high-profile or not, is very much regretted because we all strive for clean sport and clean competition," Fennell said.
"We don’t know what damage will accrue but we want to let people know we are very vigilant and laboratory testing is of the very highest standard."
Pearson won gold later Monday, andshe got to keep this one.
The Australian sprinter bounced back from last week’s disappointment to win the 100m hurdles in a CWG record 12.67 seconds.
Australia sits atop the medal tally with 142 total. England follows with 109, and host India is third with 80 medals, 30 of them gold.
The Commonwealth Games end Oct. 14.
