Gwangju 2015 Universiade Organizing Committee (GUOC) and Gwangju Metropolitan City are hosting a series of cultural events during the World University Games. As the World Youth Festival and Youth Nanjang Festival kicked off on July 4, youth all over the world visiting Gwangju will be able to enjoy the games while experiencing the local culture.
On July 4, various programs were held during the World Youth Festival at Democracy Square in Asia Culture Complex. The festival’s main highlight is an array of live performances across a diverse spectrum of artistic genres including musicals, Korean traditional music "gugak", plays etc.
In addition to the World Youth Festival, Youth Nanjang Festival was held on the other side of Democracy Square. Tennis player Marcelo Fernandez of Chile expressed, "I visited the square to learn more about Gwangju and I love it. I just finished shopping and I’m ready to enjoy what the festivals have to offer."
The GUOC president and mayor of Gwangju Metropolitan City Yoon Jang-hyun came to encourage the youth while having fun at the festivals. He stated, "I was able to visit Democracy Square because of the efforts from your parents and ancestors. Enjoy your youth and have a great time in Gwangju!"
Downtown Gwangju, Geumnamro, will be a global village until the closing ceremony. The World Youth Festival will be held through July 12 and several musicians will perform at the concert. A total of 47 teams will perform to ‘Find the hidden jewel’ at the Youth Nanjang Festival until the July 13.
