(ATR) Among the medals that the well-known auction house RR Auction has put up for sale are the gold medals of Cuban Olympic champions Leuris Pupo (shooting) and Iván Pedroso (athletics).

The Boston-based company famous for its monthly auctions has underscored the significance of the shooter Pupo's gold medal at the London Olympics.

"The medals of any winner of the most recent Olympic Games are extremely rare and coveted, and this prodigious London Games award is a truly magnificent example of Olympic determination and triumph," said Bobby Livingston, Executive Vice President of RR Auction.

The statement sent to Around the Rings highlights the trajectory of Pupo, a native of the Cuban province of Holguín, and who is currently preparing to represent Cuba again in the Olympic Games despite the obstacle of the coronavirus pandemic.

According to the note, the estimated value of the Cuban's medal is more than $50,000.

"Pupo's tenacity and perseverance finally paid off after four consecutive Summer Games," RR Auction recalled.

His first Olympic appearance came at the 2000 Summer Olympics in Sydney, where he finished tied for ninth in the pistol, rapid throw, 25 meters. In Athens 04 and Beijing 08 he finished seventh.

"After 12 years of Olympic frustration, Pupo's goal was true at London's Royal Artillery Barracks, with the gold medal totaling 34 points."

The statement also mentioned that among the more than 30 winning medals in the Olympic-themed auction is the gold medal in the men's long jump at the Sydney 2000 Games awarded to Cuban jumper Iván Pedroso.

"Iván Pedroso, Carl Lewis's old rival in the long jump event, was a four-time outdoor world champion and a five-time indoor world champion.

"This gold medal represents his only Olympic victory: he had finished fourth in Barcelona in 1992, and injuries contributed to a twelfth place in Atlanta in 1996. Pedroso was considered the best long jumper in the world from 1995 to 2002."

Pedroso's medal estimate: $20,000+.

The Cuban, native of Havana, is today a successful coach based in Spain. Among the athletes he trains is the Venezuelan jumper Yulimar Rojas, who was chosen the best athlete of 2020 by World Athletics.

A source linked to RR Auction told Around the Rings that the consignee of the Cuban medals "is a long-time Olympic collector who has decided to sell the medals in the auction house's current offering".

"And they do not foresee any problems derived from the sale," explained the source.

Also among RR Auction's offerings is a "rare" bronze medal from the 1896 Athens Olympics, as well as a torch from the 1980 Lake Placid Olympics (only 140 torches were made). Also up for auction is an official "very desirable" torch from Calgary - 1988 used during the Olympic relay.

Also featured is a remarkable collection of Tug Wilson, an American track and field athlete who competed in the 1920 Olympic Games and served as president of the United States Olympic Committee from 1953 to 1965.

RR Auction's Olympic memorabilia auction will conclude on January 21.
