Canadian Sport Institute Ontario (CSIO) is privileged to work with many sports, teams and groups of athletes leading up to the Rio Games. In addition, CSIO practitioners work with many individual carded athletes from a variety of sports such as badminton, boxing, and wrestling who will be competing at the Games. These athletes, in consultation with their coach and sport organization, access CSIO’s sport science and sport medicine services and expert practitioners to assist them in achieving their optimal performance.
CSIO practitioners create an Integrated Support Team (IST) for individual athletes, working with their sport, coach and external practitioners to ensure all of the athletes’ needs are met. Based on conversations with the athletes and their coach, CSIO maps out service provision to align with their yearly training plan (YTP). In some cases, CSIO practitioners travel to assess athletes in their sport-specific daily training environment and training facilities.
Individual athletes may also access CSIO’s services when they need to rehabilitate from an injury. Receiving treatment and care at the CSIO has facilitated speedy recoveries for many of Canada’s elite athletes. This includes access to expert sport medicine and therapy services, as well as state-of-the-art equipment such as the Hydro Works therapy pool (with an underwater treadmill with video analysis capabilities), the Woodway Blade treadmill (which is embedded in the floor and athletes can skate, bike or wheel on), and the Alter-G anti-gravity treadmill.
In addition, many individual athletes who already have their own IST established, but still choose to access CSIO’s world-class facility. All Sport Canada carded athletes have access to CSIO’s strength and conditioning gym during open training hours.
Some of the individual athletes CSIO has supported during the quadrennial includes:
Arthur Biyarslanov, Boxing
Maxime Brink-Croteau, Fencing
Mandy Bujold, Boxing
Crispin Duenas, Archery
Michelle Li, Badminton
Keegan Pereira, Field Hockey
Donna Vakalis, Modern Pentathlon
Above all, CSIO practitioners are leaders in their respective fields, supported by an administrative team who are equally committed to assisting athlete and coach development toward international podium performances.
