Cooperation of the ICMG with the Greek government in the perspective of the Mediterranean Games of 2030

The Under-Secretary of State for Culture and Sports in Greece Lefteris Avgenakis had a meeting with the Secretary General of the International Committee of the Mediterranean Games Iakovos Filippousis, having as the main topic the possible organization of the Mediterranean Games of 2030 in Iraklion, Crete, but also the possibility of reorganizing the Mediterranean Beach Games in Greece, this time in Crete.

Mr. Avgenakis and his collaborators were informed about the procedures and the deadline for submitting a candidacy, while the ICMG Secretary General presented the full planning of the Committee regarding the next years, in which the candidacy process will begin.

The Under-Secretary of State for Culture and Sports has asked the ICMG Secretary General to continue the friendly and extremely productive collaboration between the two sides which has lead in the exceptional organization of the 2019 Mediterranean Beach Games in Patras. Greece is among the founding countries of the International Committee of the Mediterranean Games and also has its headquarters in Athens and at the same time, is supporting sports in the Mediterranean basin by all means.

The candidacy of the city of Iraklion has become a priority for the leadership of sports in Greece and it has been discussed in the City Council of the Municipality of Heraklion. Iraklion of Crete is the 4th largest city and the 5th largest port of Greece, it is well known for its sports infrastructure and was one of the "Olympic cities" that organized in 2004 the Olympic tournaments of football, which was included in the program of the Athens Olympic Games.

The last time that Greece hosted the Mediterranean Games was in 1991 in Athens, while in 2019 it hosted the Mediterranean Beach Games in Patras.
