It is all very well having the structure and systems in place for theoretical success...but practical success takes more than simply a structure. In order for this to happen, we must ask, what is the role of personal leadership and influence within this structure? And how can people truly exploit their leadership potential?

To elaborate more on this, TSE Consulting's The Academy is delighted to welcome Richard B Stephenson to present and deliver a masterclass during its two-day conference held on June 7-8, 2017.

Stephenson, a Founding Partner of TrueNorth Consulting, is passionate about people performing at potential. He has 20 years of international experience enabling people to outperform themselves and companies to outperform their competitors in sales, leadership and strategic communication. Richard's long list of local and global heavyweights include Accenture, Microsoft, Sony, Motorola, McKinsey, BDO, Juton, Volvo, Shell, Exxon, IKEA, Lowe Worldwide, DNB, Gjensidige, IF, Nordea, Statkraft, Telia, Veidekke, Visma, NRK, NSB, numerous Olympic Committees and many others.

In a recent interview with The Academy, Stephenson provided a glimpse into his beliefs on the nature of leadership, and what participants of The Academy will gain from his insights:

The Academy (TA): To what extent do you believe that leaders can be made, rather than born?

Richard Stephenson (RS): How many of the world’s greatest athletes were great because of their natural talent alone? Just like athletes, leaders need to learn and train. Those who learn, focus and train the most will likely become the best. We can all be better tomorrow than we were yesterday.

TA: How important is communication to enhancing one’s leadership?

RS: According to Nitin Nohria, Dean of Harvard Business School, communication is the real work of leadership. According to Nohria, when leaders are leading they spend between 2/3 and ¾ of their time communicating. Leaders should ask themselves, "What do you spend time working on that at some point you don’t communicate to others?" When employees are surveyed and asked what they would most like their leaders to be better at, the number one answer is communication (McKinsey). If leaders can’t clearly and convincingly communication their ideas, knowledge, experience and passion to the minds and hearts of others, they can’t lead. If you want to be an effective or better leader, be an effective or better communicator.

TA: You have a great deal of experience working with sports organisations as well as large organisations in other industries. To what extent is the importance of communication to leaders relevant in the sports industry?

RS: Leadership is all about communicating expectations, systematically following-up, coaching/developing, and motivating others to higher levels of performance, regardless of industry. Many sports leaders are also private business and political leaders. I have been training and consulting across all three spheres for 20 years. Communication is equally essential across all three and the tools of strategic communication are equally as valuable to us as sports leaders as they are private business and political leaders.

TA: What do you think participants in The Academy will be able to learn from your presentation, and what will the masterclass involve?

RS: Participants will leave with three things. First, a holistic overview of the tools, tricks and techniques used by history’s greatest communicators. Second, concrete tools enabling participants to clearly and convincingly communicate anything to anyone. Thirdly, personal inspiration to change how they communicate and how to get dramatically different leadership results.

Through interactive discussions, video and authentic material analysis, we’ll explore:

• How to understand and adapt to different audiences

• How to develop audience-centred message

• The science of how to structure messages for clarity, power and impact

• The three strategies of persuasive argumentation

• The art of stimulating emotion others.

For those who learn to use these tools effectively it means the ability to virtually convince anyone of anything and anytime.

Richard B. Stephenson will be presenting at The Academy 2017, a unique management conference dedicated to sports leaders from around the world and across different sports who are looking to take themselves and their organisation to the next level. The Academy will be held on June 7-8 in Lausanne, Switzerland, and is organised by TSE Consulting, an international consulting firm specialised in the world of sport.
