(ATR) The president of the Commonwealth Games Federation tells Around the Rings that the terrorist attacks in Mumbai do not threaten the 2010 games planned for New Delhi.
“Totally untrue” is how Michael Fennell describes rumors that Melbourne, host of the 2006 Commonwealth Games, is being considered as a replacement for New Delhi for 2010 in the aftermath of the Mumbai assaults.
“When something like this happens, there’s always talk ‘what about this, what about that?’, but we are not considering any move from Delhi,” says Fennell.
“We have a security expert who will be studying this situation for how it will affect us,” he said.
“We are sensitive to individual safety, for athletes, for individuals,” says Fennell.
The Commonwealth Games will be coming to India in 2010 for the first time in the event's near 80-year history.
While security is one of the issues facing New Delhi organizers, more public have been concerns about whether the athletes village and other venues needed for the games will be ready in time. Delhi is more than 1000km from Mumbai.
