(ATR) The 19-person group to choose the replacement Tokyo 2020 logo has been approved by the organizing committee.
The Tokyo 2020 Emblem Selection Committee will meet for the first time Tuesday led by president of the Tokyo University of the Arts Ryohei Miyata. Miyata was also in charge of the preliminary committee that selected the members to sit on the new emblem committee.
The committee will seek to examine the problems that arose from the last design and create a policy for the selection of a new emblem. The last design was pulled after plagiarism allegations surfaced suggesting the emblem looked like the logo of a Belgian theatre.
Two attorneys are on the 19-person team to make sure the same mistakes are not made twice. The rest of the committee represents a variety of occupations, including art professors, Paralympians, business executives, artists and media personalities. The full list of members can be seen here.
"To ensure the success of the Tokyo 2020 Games, it is essential that we actively engage as many people as possible. We will exert our utmost efforts toward the selection of emblems that the people of Japan can be proud of, and that will inspire excitement and passion throughout the whole of the country," said Miyata.
The selection committee will choose between entrants from the second design contest for the logo. Organizers may ease the entry requirements to allow for more submissions by reducing the required number of art awards won for entrants.
