MEDELLIN, 9 April 2013 – Colombian President Juan Manuel Santos made a surprise visit today to the studio being prepared to host the IOC Evaluation Commission Videoconference for the Youth Olympic Games as a show of support for the Medellín 2018 bid.

The Colombian President arranged a portion of his visit to Medellín specifically to visit the studio for the videoconference and wish the entire team success in its continuing quest to show Medellín’s desire to welcome the youth of the world. This special visit created an enhanced atmosphere for the Medellín team the day before it holds the videoconference with the IOC on Wednesday, 10 April 2013.

"I came here to thank, on behalf of the Colombian people, every single person working so hard in this process to earn the right to host the 2018 Youth Olympic Games," President Santos said to the entire bid team. "I want to wish you the best of luck and reiterate my full support as the President of Colombia and also the support of the whole Colombian government. The Youth Olympic Games will be very important for Medellín and very important for Colombia."

President Santos was accompanied by Augusto Posada Sanchez, the President of the House of Representatives for Colombia, and Sergio Fajardo, the Governor of Medellín’s region of Antioquia, to offer their support. This show of support to the work of the bid team underlines the commitment from the highest level of Colombian government to bring the Olympic event to Medellín.

The Medellín studio has been prepared within the Plaza Mayor Convention Centre, which is also the proposed site for the Main Media Centre as well as several sport venues and culture and education activities during the Games.

Along with the many sport venues that were built in Medellín to host the 2010 South American Games, the Plaza Mayor venue is an example of the legacy from hosting previous big international sport events and showcases Medellín as a cutting-edge city with a huge passion for sport.

"Medellín has already demonstrated through hosting other events the power of its people and the passion with which they work every day and how they make things happen," President Santos added. "I hope you make this happen and we can win the right to host the Youth Olympic Games in 2018. Again, best of luck and you have my full support."

The Medellín 2018 team was thrilled with President Santos’ best wishes as they make final preparations to present their technical concept to the IOC Evaluation Commission.
