Blanco Reelected COE President

Alejandro Blanco was reelected president of the Spanish Olympic Committee (COE) on Wednesday.

The elections took place at a COE meeting that also reelected the leadership of vice president Theresa Zabell and secretary general Victor Sanchez.

Blanco said his main goal over the next four years is for Madrid to win the bid for the 2020 Olympics.

"We have been through eight long years – though I would describe them as short – a period of time in which we have shared some happy times and some sad ones too," Blanco said after his re-election. "We are now facing four more years in which the good news will outweigh the bad, and in which we will get things right and also face problems, in the hope that we will overcome them.

"Barcelona was a major change, and now Madrid should see the second major transformation of Spanish sport. We will cross the ocean to make our great dream come true," he said in reference to the IOC Session in Buenos Aires, where a 2020 host city will be selected.

Calgary Re-Lights Flame

The Olympic Cauldron outside Calgary’s Olympic Oval will burn for the next 15 days to mark the 25th anniversary of Calgary 1988.

Mayor Naheed Nenshi, former Canadian Olympic Committee president Roger Jackson and Olympic medalist in speedskating Kristina Groves were the key dignitaries at a ceremony on Wednesday to light the cauldron.

"We’ve all been blessed by the legacy and all these beautiful buildings left by the Games," Nenshi was quoted as saying by The Calgary Herald.

"But the legacy of proving what we can do as a community and as volunteers and what we can show the world is the true legacy of 1988.

"Let’s continue to do that as we build the next great city of Calgary."

New Job for LOCOG Comms Chief

Jackie Brock-Doyle is the new CEO of the Good Relations group.

The London-based agency announced the hire on Thursday, saying she will report to chairman Kevin Murray and begin her new role in July.

"At LOCOG, Jackie was central to the planning and delivery of one of the largest communications exercises of the past decade," Murray said. "With that and the prior in-house and consultancy experience Jackie has accumulated in various regions of the world, she will bring phenomenal expertise, energy and international experience to our offer."
