The City Hall presents today the Olympic swimming pool that is part of the group of venues to be use for the Modern Pentathlon competitions at the Rio 2016 Games. The Youth Arena (fencing) and the Deodoro Stadium (combined event - show jumping and pistol shooting) were inaugurated in the beginning of the month. All the venues are part of the Deodoro Sports Complex and were built by the City Hall with Federal Funds.
From today until March 14, the three venues will host the second lap of the Modern Pentathlon World Cup, the sport’s test-event. Among the 187 athletes in the event will be the Brazilian Yane Marques, bronze in London 2012 Games, and the actual Olympic champions Laura Asadauskaite (from Lithuania) and David Svoboda (from the Czeck Republic).
Built for the Rio 2007 Pan American Games, the modern pentathlon’s swimming pool was refurbished for the Olympics: new internal and external finishing, a new waterproof layer, and a modernized filtering system, besides new changing rooms. A gas-heated system with temperature controlled by a thermostat. The temporary stands for 2,000 spectators will be installed a posteriori: as the seats are rented, it is a measure adopted to save municipal funds.
After the Olympic Games, the swimming pool will be part of the venues managed by the Brazilian Army, but it will not be restricted to their use, being open to receiving high-performance Brazilian athletes and hosting national and international competitions.
OTHER VENUES FOR THE MODERN PENTATHLON COMPETITIONS
The Youth Arena will be one of the sports legacy left by the Olympic and Paralympic Games for the Deodoro region. The Sports Hall’s structure is already finished and the energy, air-conditioning, lightning, water and sewage systems ended. During the Games, the venue will have 5,000 seats, 2,000 being permanent. Besides the pentathlon’s fencing competition, it will host the matches of the female basketball’s first phases and wheelchair fencing competitions.
A temporary venue, the Deodoro Stadium will have a full capacity of 15,000 spectators. The City Hall paved its internal area, planted the grass and installed its irrigation system. Besides the combined event, it will host the rugby matches and football 7-a-side.
