Chicago 2016 appointed Olympian Bill Scherr the new director of sport and named Linda Mastandrea director of Paralympic sport and accessibility.

Scherr, a bronze medal wrestler at the 1988 Games in Seoul, will foster relationships with international and national federations to bolster support for Chicago 2016.

“As an Olympian, I know firsthand what athletes need to perform at their highest level. I will work to ensure our plan fully supports this notion, including considerations for our venue plans,” Scherr said.

Scherr chairs World Sport Chicago and has worked on councils for USA Wrestling.

Mastandrea will ensure Chicago is accessible for Paralympic athletes. She is a Paralympic gold medalist in wheelchair track and is vice president to the National Disability Sports.

Both new appointees will guarantee the athletes will dominate the bid.

“Athletes are the inspiration for the Games and the role models for today’s youth. Our plan for the Games places Olympians and Paralympians—and everything they stand for—at the heart of the bid,” said Patrick G. Ryan, chairman and CEO of Chicago 2016.

Team USA Supports 2016 Bid

The U.S. Men’s Basketball team told Chicago 2016 bid leaders it fully supports Chicago as an Olympic city.

Team USA Coach Mike Krzyzewski was born and raised in Chicago. (Getty Images) “I think Chicago is the perfect place for the 2016 Olympics. One, it’s a mini world. You go through Chicago and you go from Greektown, Little Italy—obviously for me, there’s Polishtown. It’s a mini-world, and I think the world would feel the most comfortable—they would feel at home—at a 2016 Olympics in Chicago,” said coach and Chicago-native Mike Krzyzewski.

Star LeBron James said he think Chicago is one of the best cities in the U.S. and is fascinated by its history.
