(ATR) Upcomingrenovations to Centennial Olympic Park will serve as a tribute to the modern Games.

Senior director of project and program management at the Georgia World Congress Center Adam Straight tellsAround the Rings the $17 million project consists of five phases to be completed.

Phases one and two include implementing a "Games plaza" which will feature medal podiums, historical elements of the Games, interactive pieces and more.

"If you could imagine the throwing pit of an Olympic field for shot put, javelin and discus. The plan is to place markers in the lawn to show where these Olympic records were held" says Straight.

The plaza will stretch through the current Metro Atlanta Chamber of Commerce building, which will be demolished by the start of the first phase in July.

The Games plaza will also include an Olympic alley running down the current Andrew Young International Boulevard. Interactive elements around the alley such as a 100 yard dash area will be featured as well.

"Kids can run it and see what real Olympians foot tracks look like as they're running for world record pace," says Straight.

At the new main entrance of the park the authority intends to mimic the likeness of the Olympic rings at the Rio Games. The interactive statue will serve as a playground for visitors to climb on and take selfies.

Elements in the existing park including thePierre de Coubertin statue and the water ring area will remain in their current positions.

The United States Olympic Committee (USOC) has been very supportive of the project and has had nothing but positive things to say about the renovations, according to Straight.

"We are working with the USOC with the approvals of all of those elements," says Straight.

"We have several concepts that render Olympic marks and images that we need their approval on. The authority has a great relationship with the USOCand there is a process that we go through. We will see what comes of it, but it is very exciting stuff."

The project is expected to be complete by Jan. 2019.
