(ATR) Leaders of Centro Caribe Sports began a two-day inspection visit to San Salvador on Wednesday, one of the two candidates to host the XXIV Central American and Caribbean Games.
The team, headed by the president of the regional sports organization (former CACSO), Dominican Luis Mejía Oviedo, who is a member of the IOC, expects to meet in the next few hours with the President of the Republic, Nayib Bukele.
Last month CCS visited the other bidder, the Puerto Rican city of Mayaguez, observing part of the infrastructure, interviewing sports, Olympic and political leaders, and speaking with the Governor of Puerto Rico, Pedro Pierluisi.
The international mission hopes to carry out a similar program in the Central American capital that organized these regional games in 2002. Mayaguez held them in 2010.
The Future Venues Commission is made up of its president Jimena Saldaña (Mexico), and members Henry Núñez (Costa Rica) and Ángel Morales (United States Virgin Islands), and the president of the CCS Marketing Commission, Felipe Vicini (Dominican Republic).
Upon arrival, the delegation observed an atmosphere of hope in the city with the beginning of a mass vaccination process to try to stop the spread of COVID-19.
Despite the serious epidemiological situation in the region, CCS decided to go for the face-to-face inspection of both candidate cities in order to be convinced in situ of the viability of the two suitors.
CCS also seeks to obtain from the main authorities the guarantee of the formal commitment for the organization of the Games. San Salvador and Mayaguez are running after original host Panama pulled out last summer due to the pandemic.
Around the Rings learned that after this visit the CCS executive committee will hold a meeting next Saturday. Although the content of the agenda has not been released, the virtual meeting is expected to set a date to announce in the next few days which of the two cities will be the host.
Mayaguez has proposed the last week of May or the beginning of June 2022 for the opening of the latest edition of the oldest regional games in the world while San Salvador has proposed March 2023, which would be four months after the country hosts the Central American Games in the city of Santa Tecla.
The winner will be determined by the vote of the 11 members of the CCS Executive Committee, surely virtually.
