(ATR) International Triathlon Union president Marisol Casado comfortably defeats Korean challenger Kyung-Sun Yu to win re-election at the ITU Congress in Auckland.
Casado of Spain garnered 82 votes to 33 for Kyung-Sun to earn another four-year term at the helm of the ITU; five voters abstained.
Also re-elected was secretary general Loreen Barnett of Canada. Two candidates withdrew, leaving Barnett up against Philip Schaedler of Liechtenstein for the No. 2 ITU job.
Her re-election means the ITU remains the only Olympic federation with women in the top two leadership roles.
Casado told Around the Rings earlier this month that she wouldcontinue her quest to develop the sport in Africa and the Middle East inher next term as ITU president. Preparations for triathlon’s debut in the Paralympics at Rio 2016 andthe campaign to get the team relay onto the Rio 2016 Olympic program areamong major items in her in-tray in the months ahead.
An IOC member since 2010, Casado's return to office is also good news for theMadrid 2020 bid in its quest to secure the Olympics next September. Shewill be an influential figure in the campaign.
In the vice-president race, Antonio Alvarez of Mexico, Sarah Springman of Great Britain and Bill Walker of Australia were all re-elected.
Three members to the ITU Executive Board were re-elected – Ria Damgren Nilsson of Sweden, Ahmed Nasser of Egypt, and Shin Otsuka of Japan. Debbie Alexander of South Africa was also elected to the Executive Board for the first time.
A total of 109 national federations were represented at the 25th ITU Congress held at the Viaduct Events Centre in Auckland.
On Tuesday, 14 new federations were ratified as new ITU members: Belarus, Burundi, Kuwait, Lebanon, Libya, Madagascar, Maldives, Nepal, Oman, Palestine, Qatar, Rwanda, Sri Lanka & United Arab Emirates.
The elections at the ITU Congress concluded a busy four days for the federation, which included the Grand Final of the 2012 ITU World Triathlon Series. Sweden’s Lisa Norden and Britain’s Jonathan Brownlee were crowned the 2012 ITU world champions.
