Canadian Sport Institute Ontario (CSIO) is excited to announce that it has recently opened the doors of its new satellite facility to high performance athletes and coaches at Mattamy National Cycling Centre.
The Centre, which houses the only indoor velodrome in Canada and only 2nd indoor velodrome in North America, meeting top international standards, is a legacy of the 2015 Pan/Para Pan American Games. Known during the Games as the Cisco Milton Pan Am/Parapan Am Velodrome, the 250-metre timber track, featuring two 42-degree banks, will host Track Cycling for both able-bodied and para-athletes.
CSIO’s new satellite training facility includes a 1,100 sqft of Strength and Conditioning space with an adjoining kitchenette, a 200 sqft Sport Therapy Suite, a Sport Lab (shared with Cycling Canada) featuring state-of-the-art equipment for testing and training high performance athletes, and 400 sqft of office space. CSIO’s presence at the Velodrome coincides with Cycling Canada and Ontario Cycling Association also opening offices at Mattamy National Cycling Centre.
With the National and Provincial Track Cycling Teams training at the facility CSIO can provide sport science, sport medicine, leadership, coaching support, equipment and technology onsite, enhancing the high performance daily training environment for these elite level athletes and coaches. This will help to better prepare these athletes and coaches for competition and reaching the podium. Specifically, CSIO will have full-time performance services staff in the areas of physiology, strength and conditioning, and nutrition operating at the Velodrome, creating an Integrated Support Team (IST) of sport science and sport medicine experts that work together to support coaches and athletes in their goal of international podium success. The IST will also include other disciplines such as mental performance, biomechanics and performance analysis, sport medicine and sport therapy with these additional services provided by CSIO’s staff of experts who will travel to Milton from the main office at the Toronto Pan Am Sports Centre as needed.
As a legacy facility of the 2015 Pan/Parapan Am Games, the Mattamy National Cycling Centre also features recreational and community programming and facilities. Aside from the velodrome track, other features of the Mattamy National Cycling Centre include:
· 3 All Purpose Courts
· Jogging Track
· Fitness Centre and Studio
· Multi-Purpose Meeting Space
· Community Bicycle Storage
· Bike and Repair Shop
· Café
QUOTES:
"The opening of our satellite facility at the Milton Velodrome is another milestone for Canadian Sport Institute Ontario and in building the sport system in Ontario and Canada. Being able to provide enhanced sport science and sport medicine services in a dedicated high performance space at the Velodrome is a fantastic opportunity for these athletes and coaches to optimize their daily training and ultimately their performance on the international stage. We are so appreciative of the Provincial Government, through the Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Sport, Sport Canada, and Own the Podium for their tremendous support in making this possible."
- Debbie Low, Chief Executive Officer, Canadian Sport Institute Ontario
"The Ontario Cycling Association is thrilled to have CSIO as a neighbour at the Velodrome. Having them there full-time and able to provide sport science and sport medicine services to our athletes and coaches in their daily training environment will be a monumental enhancement to their development and ability to achieve their best. We are grateful to CSIO for their continued support of our programs, athletes and coaches, and the leadership they provide us through the Ontario High Performance Sport Initiative."
- Jim Crosscombe, Chief Executive Officer, Ontario Cycling Association
"Having the CSIO at the Mattamy National Cycling Centre Velodrome allows us to provide the coaches and athletes with sport science and medicine services such as lab testing and strength and conditioning that will now be full-time rather than only available during training camps. Our athletes can now access medical services without worrying about out-of-country medical costs and they can set up a living situation that allows them to recover well between training sessions. Those are the basic things that have been missing while the team trained abroad. Our team can finally unpack their suitcases and train on a level playing field with our international competitors."
- Andrea Wooles, Sport Science and Medicine Manager, Cycling Canada
