The Budapest 2024 Olympic bid this week received further support from the Hungarian Hotel & Restaurant Association (HHRA). Around
96% of the hotels in the Balaton Corridor region attended a series of presentations over two days from the Vice Chairman of Budapest
2024 and Government Tourism Commissioner, Gusztáv Bienerth. Bienerth said, "Our proven capability of staging major sports events
in this region, coupled with the robustness of our plans, has led to this overwhelming support from hoteliers in the Veszprem and Balaton area."
The Chief Secretary of the HHRA, István Kovács, and the regional leader of the association, Csaba Baldauf, were present on the first day’s meeting. Mr Ákos Niklai represented the HHRA on the second day. Leading hoteliers from 144 hotels and chains in the region
participated, along with spokespeople for local tourism associations who represented small hotels and commercial accommodation. Over the two days, the group agreed the provision of a total of 8,799 rooms.
"We are delighted to continue the work we have started in Budapest with the Bid Committee early last month", commented István Kovács. He went on to say that "the fact that a large proportion of the hoteliers in the area are interested in committing their room stock to Budapest 2024 signifies their experience as hosts to both tourists and world-class athletes, and also that they recognise the good business sense of the proposal."
As one of the region’s foremost tourist destinations, Lake Balaton and the city of Balatonfüred are accustomed to seasonal crowds and also have a strong history of hosting sport competition events. Earlier this year, the FINA 10km Marathon Swimming World Cup and Sailing 420 and 470 Junior European Championships were hosted here, and will be followed by the Sailing Laser Europa Cup this September. In 2017, the ISAF Dinghy World Championships will be welcomed to this stunning lakeside location. The 2015 Dragon European Championship was so successful that the event will return in 2018. International Dragon Association Chief Secretary, Tim Pearson, commented at the time of awarding the event that he "was very satisfied with the infrastructure" offered at Lake Balaton.
Balatonfüred and Lake Balaton (Europe’s largest freshwater lake) stage four sports in the Budapest 2024 Games concept, including
Sailing, Golf, Aquatics (Marathon Swimming) and Handball preliminaries.
