Bubka re-elected as President of Ukraine National Olympic Committee

Sergey Bubka was re-elected today as the President of Ukraine NOC for the third consecutive four-year term.

Sergey Bubka was re-elected today as the President of Ukraine NOC for the third consecutive four-year term. As a sole candidate for the position, Bubka received 108 votes in favor with 1 against at the 29th General Assembly of the National Olympic Committee in Kyiv.

"I am humbled and honored", said Bubka. "I am very thankful to the Olympic movement in Ukraine for the trust they put in me. A lot has been achieved in the past years and Ukraine NOC committed to further developing Olympic sports and help Ukrainian athletes successfully compete on the international level".

Bubka immediately pledged to strengthen youth involvement into sport and to build on sport as a means of promotion of Olympic values of sportsmanship, respect and unity in Ukraine.

European Olympic Committees President Patrick Hickey said: "I would like to congratulate Sergey Bubka on his re-election and wish him all the best in this new term as NOC President. I have followed Bubka’s career for years and have always been impressed with his clear vision and ability to achieve success in the most difficult circumstances. I am confident that he will continue effectively lead the country’s Olympic movement during this difficult time for Ukraine".

As President of Ukraine National Olympic Committee since 2005, Bubka has transformed the NOC into one of the most progressive in the world. Ukraine NOC staff is based in all of the country’s regions with each regional office taking responsibility for delivering an array of programmes designed to bring young people into sport and promote the Olympic Movement.

"I would like to say that there is no other alternative to the man who is a symbol, a legend, person which people respect not only in Ukraine but around the world – to my President, Sergey Bubka." - said Vitaliy Klitshko, Ukraine NOC Vice-President, Mayor of Kyiv.

Among some of Bubka’s achievements are a National Olympic Day, the Olympic Stork, which provides Olympic-themed education to more than 250,000 schools across the country, televised annual awards and an Olympic Academy.

Sergey Bubka is a Vice-President of International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) and Executive Board member of International Olympic Committee (IOC).
