(ATR) President of NBC Olympics Gary Zenkel tells Around the Rings the network is "pleased" with progress made on the International Broadcast Center.
Zenkel and representatives from 57 other rights-holding broadcasters are in Rio for meetings with 2016 organizers and Olympic Broadcasting Services. The meetings run from Sept. 8-11, with Thursday and Friday reserved for one-on-one meetings between broadcasters and OBS.
The 220 delegates toured both the Deodoro and Olympic Parks and had a chance to get an update on the delayed International Broadcast Center. Due to open months ago, it's now slated to be finished next month.
"We’re very pleased with the progress OBS and the Rio organizing committee have made with the IBC and all of our other production needs," Zenkel tolATR.
"We are in constant communication with OBS and Rio executives and we find this particular event very helpful in our overall preparations to produce what will be the most live Olympics in U.S. television history."
Sven Schaeffner, Rio 2016 director of broadcast integration, toldATR that the IBC is on track to be delivered on time, so that OBS can work with the broadcasters to build the necessary studio space in Rio de Janeiro.
OBS chief Yiannis Exarchos last month told ATR the deadline for constructionis Oct. 31 and that he was confident there would be no delays. Originally, the IBC was set to be delivered in August, near the time for the one year to go celebrations.
"During the venue tour we were able to demonstrate that the delivery of venues and infrastructure is fully on track," Schaeffner said.
"With the support of OBS, the rights-holding broadcasters have the important mission of bringing the inspirational performances of the athletes together with the beauty of the Cidade Maravilhosa to a worldwide audience of over four billion people.
"Throughout this week we are working hard to finetune the Games-time broadcast operations and integrate new innovations and developments in Olympic broadcasting. The Rio 2016 Games will raise the bar and deliver more hours of TV coverage than ever before."
