Rio Team will have from 10 to 13 athletes up to London 2012

The Brazilian Olympic Committee (BOC) and the Rio de Janeiro City Government presented the first members of the Rio Team, an investment project to prepare athletes with potential to win medals in the 2012 London Olympic Games. As of next April Diego Hypólito (artistic gymnastics), Ricardo Winicki (sailing), Kaio Marcio (swimming) and Barbara Leôncio (athletics) will be benefited with financial and logistical support during their entire preparation during this Olympic cycle. Other Rio Team members will be announced shortly. Rio Team will have from 10 to 13 athletes and receive $ 12 million up to 2012 to invest in the athletes and their technical team. BOC expects that other cities and states join the Brasil Team Support Program, also launched this week.

BOC will coordinate the technical aspect of the project, in partnership with the Brazilian Olympic Federations and the sports entities the athletes belong to. In addition, BOC will be in charge of the financial management of the actions. "It does not matter whether a city government will support one, ten or 50 athletes. We are prepared to design a project according to the interest and financial capacity of the city and state governments. What does matter is to provide this structure to a greater number of athletes," stated Carlos Arthur Nuzman, Brazilian Olympic Committee's president.
