(ATR) The head of the Brazilian Paralympic Committee says he wants Brazil to finish fifth in the medal table at Rio 2016.
Andrew Parsons was speaking to members of the media Tuesday at Casa Brasil, along with directors from Rio 2016 to celebrate the start of the London 2012 Paralympics.
Parsons gave an indication of what kind of improvement he wanted to see from Team Brazil in the days – and years – to come.
"We have a very ambitious target, which is seventh in the medal table," he said.
"We finished in the ninth place in Beijing. During the last four years, we have had a very good preparation, the best preparation for years, I have no doubt about that.
"In Rio, the aim is to finish fifth. There are a block of countries who do well. You have China, Great Britain, the U.S. and even Russia – they are the big four. Then, I think we can be the team in fifth."
The president praised London’s preparations and took particular note of what the Rio organizers could learn from.
"I think London has done a fantastic job – London is a city well-prepared, the athletes are very happy with the village and the transport, with the food and the training venues.
"I think the best part of it has been the marketing. They’ve sold 2.4 million tickets, almost sold out and you see the signs everywhere – I think it’s very good."
