The Island of Bornholm's unique nature and characteristic rocks will be a challenge for para-golfers from throughout Europe at the 2012 European Championships Paragolf, if the Danish Sports Organisation for the Disabled (DHIF) succeeds in attracting the event to Denmark.

In case of a successful Danish bid, Rø Golfbaner, will be the beautiful venue of the event in September 2012 on Bornholm, one of Denmark's most popular tourist destinations. Then, about 200 of Europe's best para-golfers are bound for Bornholm and they will no doubt leave an imprint on the island, as an event of such a size is deemed to involve many local partners.

However, it is not the first time that Bornholm has hosted para-golf tournaments. Over the past few years, the Danish Sports Organisation for Disabled and the local golf clubs on Bornholm have successfully staged the annual golf tournament, Handigolf Bornholm, on four of Bornholm's golf courses. On this occasion, para-golfers from all over Europe are competing for the event title at Denmark's most beautiful golf tournament.

The Danish Sports Organisation for Disabled is looking forward to possibly getting the opportunity of hosting the 2012 European Championships Paragolf and trusts that the Danish participant, Stefan Mørkholt (Gyttegårdens GK), stands a good chance of picking up a medal.

"Lately, Stefan Mørkholt (Gyttegårdens GK) has demonstrated his abilities by winning a silver medal at the Team-World Championships Paragolf 2011 and a gold medal at Swedish International 2011. Thanks to these impressive results he is now ranked as one of the world's absolutely best para-golfers and we would love to see Stefan Mørkholt help winning the Team- European Championships Paragolf on home ground" says Michael Møllgaard Nielsen, Elite Manager of the Danish Sports Organisation for the Disabled.

Apart from highlighting golf as a potential sport for the disabled, the 2012 European Championships Paragolf will surely promote Bornholm as a major golf and tourist destination as traditionally the participating para-golfers are accompanied by friends and family. The island will no doubt hum of tourists in the late summer of 2012. That is if the event goes to Denmark.

The Danish Sports Organisation for Disabled has a long-standing tradition for hosting major international sports events with Sport Event Denmark as a partner. In 2011 alone, the organisation is host of no less than 2 major international championships. In September in Roskilde; the UCI Para-Cycling Road World Championships and in October in Assens; the European Goalball Championships.

Most probably in the course of September 2011, The Danish Sports Organisation for Disabled will know if they win the rights to host the 2012 European Championships Paragolf after fierce competition with France.

Behind the Danish bid to host the 2012 European Championships Paragolf stand as strong partners as the Danish Sports Organisation for Disabled, Vækstforum Bornholm (local partner) and Sport Event Denmark. Both Vækstforum Bornholm and Sport Event Denmark back up the Danish event staging financially.
