(ATR) Bob Stiles, known as one of the world’s experts on Olympic venue planning and operations, died Aug. 20 at his home in Atlanta from natural causes.
Stiles was on holiday at the time from his position in Russia as vice president of Games Services and Management for Sochi 2014.
Olympic organizers said Friday they were deeply saddened by the news.
“Our deepest condolences go to his family and many dear friends around the world,” Dmitry Chernyshenko, president and CEO of Sochi 2014, said in a statement.
“Bob made an outstanding technical and management contribution to Sochi 2014. His impact on the successful start to our Games preparation has been immense and he will be greatly missed by everyone connected with Sochi 2014 and the Olympic Family who knew him.
“We will do everything possible to honor Bob's vision and talent in the years ahead. His legacy will be an outstanding Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games in 2014.”
Prior to joining the Sochi staff, Stiles worked on the 2014 bid as a consultant with Atlanta-based Helios Partners. He has worked on other Olympic bids, including Salzburg’s 2006 Winter Olympic campaign, and was involved in planning, implementing, managing and consulting on a total of six Olympic Games and three FIFA World Cups.
“Bob Stiles was a true professional,” Helios President Terrence Burns tells Around the Rings.
“His wisdom and guidance touched innumerable lives. Helios was fortunate to have Bob on our team,” said Burns.
Stiles began his Olympics career with Los Angeles in 1984 as an assistant competition manager for football. In 1996 he was a senior venue manager for the Atlanta Games, responsible for the Olympic Stadium.
Stiles also worked at the 1994 World Cup and as a vice president for the 1999 Women’s World Cup.
Robert Vernon Stiles was born in 1948 in Grand Rapids, Michigan but grew up in California. Atlanta remained his home base following the 1996 Olympics but he was spending much of his time living in Moscow, due to his Sochi work.
He is survived by wife Olga Stiles and son Nick Stiles, who is also in the venue management business.
Plans for a memorial service are still incomplete.
