Organisers of the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games have announced the names of three new recruits who will be helping to deliver the biggest sports programme in Commonwealth Games history.
Dom Elsom, Angus McKenzie and Martin Bridgwood have all joined Birmingham 2022 as Sport Competition Managers and they will be part of the team delivering 19 sports and eight para sports at the biggest multi-sport event to be held in the UK for a decade.
All three will be responsible for the planning and delivery of the competition for each of their designated sports, ensuring that it is organised in accordance with the international federation’s rules and regulations.
The roles will also see the three new starters being tasked with ensuring that athletes, team officials and technical officials are provided with all the facilities and services they require at the Games’ training venues, as well as the official competition venues for each sport.
Dom, who has been appointed as Sport Competition Manager for gymnastics, has joined Birmingham 2022 on secondment from British Gymnastics where his most recent role was as one of the national governing body’s Event Managers. A former gymnast and coach, Dom has been involved in the sport since the age of three.
A former GB international for athletics and a winter Olympian for bobsleigh, Angus is also bringing a huge amount of event experience to his role as Sport Competition Manager for athletics, having worked on the London Olympics and the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games, as well as indoor and outdoor World Championships for the sport.
Martin, who grew up in Great Barr in Birmingham, will be Sport Competition Manager for cycling at Birmingham 2022.
He was the Track Cycling Manager at the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games and since then has worked on numerous international and national cycling events and is an International commissaire for track and road cycling, both of which are included on the Birmingham 2022 sports programme, along with mountain bike, which will be held at Cannock Chase Forest.
Matt Kidson, Director of Sport for Birmingham 2022, said: "We were inundated with applications for the competition manager roles and the calibre of candidates was very impressive. We are very pleased that Dom, Angus and Martin are joining the team. Having these new team members on board means we can now move to the next phase of delivering the best possible sports programme for the Games.
"With 19 sports and eight para sports, we are proud to have the biggest sports programme the Commonwealth Games has ever seen and that’s why we are building a team of dedicated professionals who are focused on ensuring that everything is in place for the 4,500 athletes to be able to deliver their best possible performances."
Eleven more Competition Managers are joining the team over the next few weeks and the search for nineteen assistant competition managers will also begin later in the year.
