Reno Waits Turn for Winter Olympics Bid

The head of the coalition seeking to bring the Winter Games to Reno, Nevada/Lake Tahoe, California area tells Around the Rings “we are rooting” for Chicago in its race for the 2016 Summer Games.

Jon Killoran admits that a victory by Chicago would put lid on the hopes of the Reno Tahoe Winter Games Coalition.

"Our focus is to prepare ourselves when it becomes appropriate to make a bid,” he says.

Sensitive to the Chicago bid, Killoran says his group has dropped any mention of plans to bid for 2018, the next Winter Olympics bid cycle that will open soon after the October 2009 IOC vote for a 2016 host.

For its part, the U.S. Olympic Committee does not acknowledge the Reno efforts.

“There is no Reno 2018,” says spokesman Darryl Seibel

“There is one, and only one, U.S. bid, and that is Chicago,” he said earlier this week.

Seibel says there were no meetings between the USOC and Reno in Beijing, despite news reports that Killoran might do so during the 12 days he was at the Olympics.

Killoran says he went to the Games in an unofficial capacity, without any credentials, and confirms he stayed clear of USOC officials while in Beijing.

Toronto’s Pan-Am Bid Heads to Acapulco

David Peterson, newly appointed chair of Toronto’s 2015 Pan-American Games bid, will make his third attempt to bring a large sporting event to Canada’s Golden Horseshoe region.

The former premier and his yet-to-be-named committee will travel to Acapulco, Mexico at the beginning of October to introduce themselves at the annual meeting of the Pan American Sports Organization. Interested cities must submit bids prior to Oct. 12, the close of the PASO meeting.

Other bids are expected from Caracas, Lima and Bogota.

The last three Pan Ams have been held in the Caribbean, South America and Mexico which could mean preference for Canada.

According to media reports, the potential television viewing audience could also work in Toronto’s favor. Media coverage in North America has been limited in the past to mostly Spanish-speaking media, so PASO could have an opportunity to tap into an Eastern-time zone market.

“I think we need a win here,” Dalton McGuinty, Ontario’s premier, told the Toronto Sun this week. Many venues for the Toronto 2015 Pan American Games would be located along Lake Ontario.

"We went after the Olympic bid and we came up short there. We need to know that we can come together and achieve some stuff together.”

Canadian Olympic Committee president Mike Chambers applauded the choice of Peterson.

“Appointing David Peterson to lead this effort gets us off to a great start. He has the experience and the vision to get everyone working together,” said

The Ontario operating budget for the 2015 Pan Ams is set at roughly $1.7 billion to be split by the federal government, the province and various municipalities.

A decision on the bid is expected by October 2009.
