(ATR) The Italian Olympic Committee will decide in April between Venice and Rome to bid for the 2020 Olympics.
CONI President Gianni Petrucci said in Rome Tuesday that the two cities must prepare dossiers by the end of February and that he expects a decision from CONI in late April.
In October Petrucci ruled out the chances for Bari and Palermo, which had expressed interest in bidding.
The bid will be the latest summer bid from Italy since Rome sought the 2004 Games, awarded in 1997 to Athens. Italy turned around and two years later won the 2006 Winter Games in Turin.
Whether it's Rome or Venice, we want to win," Petrucci said at the briefing. He said that "Rome and Venice are cities with a noteworthy global allure”.
The period to apply for the 2020 race won’t open until 2011, with the deadline for National Olympic Committees to submit a nominee soon after the contest for the 2018 Winter Olympics is decided in early July that year. The IOC will elect a 2020 host in 2013.
IOC vice president Mario Pescante says a bid from Italy for 2020 faces long odds, according to the ANSA report.
