Baku Presents Logo, "Together We Can"
The bid from Baku unveils a logo for the 2020 Olympic bid inspired by the hand-woven rugs of the Caucasus region and a slogan: "Together We Can".
Both were released during a ceremony in Baku Wednesday evening attended by bid vp Chingiz Huseynzade and minister of youth and sport Azad Rahimov.
"In the 20 years since our country’s independence, we have come a very long way as a nation. If we realize our dream of hosting the Games in 2020, with the Olympic Movement at our side, I believe that together we can take the next great leap forward in our country’s development," said Huseynzade.
This is the second time for Baku as a bidder. It failed to make the cut for the 2016 race five years ago.
The logo launch makes three 2020 bids with emblems. Doha, Istanbul and Madrid still have to announce their graphic look. Rome and Tokyo are the other bids with 2020 logos.
The Baku logo features "2020" as part of the design, all part of the brand story that includes the slogan, according to this statement from the bid:
"This concept of ‘coming together’ is at the very heart of Azeri history and culture. The logo is therefore full of local meaning and provenance. It is not mere decoration, it is a graphical articulation of the Bid’s slogan – "Together we can".
"Each individual colourful thread contributes to making the whole weave stronger and more beautiful," says the statement.
The bid also has a website, www.baku2020.com.
Doha Names Experts to Prepare Bid
Doha 2020 names Olympic experts MI Associates as the lead project consultants to work on the bid city's applicant file.
MI Associates, which has advised summer Olympic bid and Games organizing committees including Sydney, Athens, Beijing, London and Rio de Janeiro, will utilize Qatari and international expertise as part of the bid file production process.
Doha 2020 CEO Noora Al-Mannai said the Sydney-based specialist project management and business consults had unparalleled experience in the sport and Olympic arena. Company founder and chairman Jim Sloman was the chief operating officer for the Sydney 2000 Olympics.
"They have worked on numerous Olympic Games projects and their insights and track record of delivery will prove invaluable as the production of our applicantfile progresses," she said.
MI Associates provided strategic advice, implementation of venue operations planning and delivery of an operational readiness program to the Doha 2006 Asian Games.
Hugh Taylor, director of MI Associates, said: "This is a very exciting project for us because of the real commitment and ambition of Doha in terms of the development and delivery of sport.
"We have had the opportunity to work with the Qatar Olympic Committee on their Sports Venues Masterplan and our engagement with Doha 2020 flows naturally from this project. In partnership with the bid team our aim is to produce a first-class applicant file."
Taylor was part of the team from Doha taking part in the IOC seminar for the 2020 applicant cities held in Lausanne last month.
Doha 2020 has already named London-based Vero, headed by Mike Lee, as an international communications consultant.
The IOC deadline for submission of the applicant file is Feb 15.
