(ATR) European Championships Board wants all events to be staged in one city or region

(ATR) European sports federation members have launched the bid race for the 2022 edition of the multi-sport event.

European cities are invited to submit their interest via a preliminary questionnaire to be returned to the European Championships Board by the end of 2016. Glasgow and Berlin will co-host the first edition in August 2018.

European Championships Management is coordinating the selection process on behalf of its member federations – governing bodies for athletics, aquatics, cycling, gymnastics, rowing , triathlon and golf. The 2022 hosts will be announced in November 2017.

The board wants all events to be staged in one city or region between late July and August 2022. The event, seven European championships with 13 disciplines across 12 days, will bring together Europe’s top athletes in "an exciting new format with the full support of Europe’s free-to-air broadcasters".

More than 4,500 competitors will vie for over 170 gold medals.

"The 2022 European Championships will be an incredible opportunity for host cities considering the direct and indirect economic benefits," said European Athletics president Svein Arne Hansen, co-chair of the 2018 board.

"We believe the innovative and sustainable event is very attractive and affordable, not least because of its cost-efficient staging model which is very good value from a host city perspective in comparison to other multi-sport opportunities in the market."

Hansen’s remarks appear to refer to the billions of dollars Azerbaijan invested in staging the inaugural European Games in 2015. After the Netherlands withdrew its 2019 bid last summer and amid the fallout from the Russian doping scandal, the European Olympic Committees has yet to decide on the hosts of the second edition that was planned to be co-hosted in Sochi and Kazan.

NOCs or cities interested in staging the 2022 European Championships are asked to email EC2022@europeanchampionships.com to receive hosting information.
