(ATR) The world said goodbye to Halloween a few days ago but from the decision by Beyonce and Jay-Z to dress up as the Olympic champions Florence Griffith-Joyner and Tommie Smith still has people talking.
The initiative of the famous couple was a worthy tribute that could set guidelines for future Halloween celebrations.
The truth is that Beyonce and Jay-Z lit up social networks with their imitation of the legendary figures of world athletics.
Griffith-Joyner, known as Flo-Jo, was also known for her outfits, many of which she designed herself. Beyoncé chose her classic one-legged leotard in fluorescent purple.
Griffith-Joyner's daughter was shocked.
"Unreal. @beyonce, thank you for giving my mom the recognition, paying the homage, and keeping my mother’s memory alive. And to JAY-Z for bringing homage to Tommie Smith," wrote Mary Jo Griffith. "Track & field world needs more acknowledgment. My mother is resting in paradise smiling. Thank you momma Queen B."
Florence Griffith-Joyner is considered the fastest woman of all time based on the fact that the world records she set in 1988 in both the 100m (10.49) and 200m (21.34) still stand.
She went on to win three gold medals at the 1988 Olympics. Shortly after the 1988 games, she abruptly retired. After her retirement from athletics, Griffith-Joyner remained a pop culture figure through endorsement deals, acting, and designing. She died in her sleep as the result of an epileptic seizure in 1998 at the age of 38.
In these days, with the celebration of the 50th anniversary of the Olympic Games in Mexico, the action of Tommie Smith and John Carlos has been widely remembered.
At the 1968 Summer Olympics, Smith, aged 24, won the 200-meter sprint finals and gold medal in 19.83 seconds – the first time the 20-second barrier was broken legally. His Black Power salute with Carlos, who finished third, atop the medal podium to protest racism and injustice against African-Americans in the United States caused controversy, as it was seen as politicizing the Olympic Games. It remains a symbolic moment in the history of the Black Power movement.
Undoubtedly the images of Beyoncé and Jay-Z's costumes secured a place on the Olympic podium of world attention on Halloween 2018.
