On its 388-day tour of the Commonwealth, the Queen’s Baton has made a special pit-stop, visiting the Commonwealth Youth Games for the first time in history.
Held this year in Nassau, Bahamas, the Youth Games are for athletes aged 14-18 and the Queen’s Baton cheered on all 1,300 of them from around the Commonwealth as they took part in friendly competition and contested 94 medals over the past five days.
The ultimate symbol of the Commonwealth Games, the Baton is a source of inspiration for the athletes, some of whom now have their sights set on representing their nation or territory at the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games next April.
Since touching down in Trinidad and Tobago on 28 May, the Baton has weaved its way throughout the Caribbean for 52 days, visiting 14 Commonwealth islands.
Relayed on beaches that give the Gold Coast’s a run for their money, the Baton has travelled by horse, golf buggy, sail boat, bicycle, plane, kayak, flyboard and even a bobsled, by one of the original Jamaican bobsled teammates (Calgary 1988).
The Bahamas marks the Baton’s first stop in the America’s region, and nears the halfway mark on its way to Australia.
