The Spanish Olympic Committee and the newspaper Marca –the most widely distributed sports publication in Spain, paid tribute to the athletes awarded medals in the Barcelona 92 Olympic Games. More than fifty athletes gathered at the headquarters of the Spanish Olympic Committee to honour Spanish Sport in an event chaired by Alejandro Blanco, President of the Spanish Olympic Committee and of Madrid 2020 Organization, and Óscar Campillo, Director of Marca.
Recalling the memories of the incredible moments lived, the Spanish Olympic medallists expressed their conviction that after almost reaching the Olympic goal in 2012 and 2016, Madrid’s time has come.
"The time has come, but not only for Madrid. Hosting the Games once more would be a great opportunity for Spain. In fact, we are ready for it, as we have already shown", stated Alfonso Pérez, gold medal with the Spanish football national team in Barcelona 92.
Former sailor Theresa Zabell, gold medallist together with Patricia Guerra in sailing 470 class in Barcelona 92, and International Relations CEO of the Madrid 2020 bid, insisted on the economic argument. "Our Government is aware of the fact that bringing the Games to Madrid is not an expense, but a long-term investment in legacy, enthusiasm and employment", she added.
Conchita Martínez, silver medallist in Barcelona together with Arantxa Sánchez Vicario in tennis doubles, confirmed her support to the Madrid bid. "I think Madrid has everything. It’s a wonderful city which deserve the Olympic Games. It will always have my support", quoted the tennis player. "I wish this dream comes true so in 2040 some other athletes can celebrate the success as we are doing today".
Judo, athletics, water polo, field hockey, and boxing were some of the sports represented at this emotional meeting, which helped to remember the change that these Games supposed to Spanish sport.
