Bach Says Success Possible for German Olympic Bid

(ATR) IOC President Thomas Bach says a German bid for the 2024 or 2028 Games would be a "very, very strong one."

(ATR)IOC President Thomas Bach says a German bid for the 2024 or 2028 Olympic Games has a good chance to succeed.

According to the German Press Agency (DPA), Bach said an Olympic bid from his home country "would really have a good chance."

"A German bid, supported by a vast majority of the population, would be a very, very strong one,"Bach was quoted telling reporters in Nanjing this week.

The DOSB, Germany's Olympic committee will decide in December whether Hamburg or Berlin will bid for 2024 or 2028.

The 1972 Summer Olympics in Munich were the last Games that took place in Germany. In 2011, Munich lost to PyeongChang in the bid race to host the 2018 Winter Olympics. The Bavarian city's bid for the 2022 Olympics was foiled by voters in last November.Berlin hosted the 1936 Olympics, but failed in its campaign to host the 2000 Summer Games. The city ofLeipzig bid to host the 2012 Olympics, but lost out to the eventual winner London.

A host city for the 2024 Games will be selected in 2017, and the 2028 host in 2021.

Bids for the 2024 Olympics are expected from the United States, Paris, Italy, Qatar and possibly Istanbul. Other countries and cities are also rumored to be interested in 2024. So far there have been no firm declarations of interest for 2028.
