The National Parliament of the Republic of Azerbaijan (the Milli Mejlis) this week voted to fully endorse the Baku 2020 Bid to host the 2020 Summer Olympic and Paralympic Games.

Ogtay Asadov, the Chairman of the Azerbaijani Parliament, has now sent an official communication to Jacques Rogge, President of the International Olympic Committee, announcing that the Baku 2020 Bid has the total support of the National Assembly and all the political parties in Azerbaijan.

Konul Nurullayeva, CEO of the Baku 2020 Bid Committee, said she was delighted and proud that the Bid enjoyed so much support. "Not only does our Parliament stand fully behind the Bid to host the Olympics, but we are enthusiastically supported by every section of Azerbaijani society," she said.

"The public opinion poll we carried out recently as part of our Applicant File showed 95% support for the Bid from ordinary Azerbaijanis. 93% also said they believed that hosting the Olympic and Paralympic Games in Baku would have a positive impact on sport throughout the country. Our National Olympic Committee, our sports federations, our business community and the citizens of Baku would all very much like to welcome the Olympic Movement in 2020."
