A shooting section of nine athletes has today been named for the 2013 Australian Youth Olympic Festival (AYOF), which will pave the way for Australia’s next shooting champions to make their mark.
The shooting section is headlined by Emily Esposito, 18, who will make her Australian Youth Olympic Festival bow two years after competing at the inaugural Youth Olympic Games in Singapore.
Esposito, the younger sister of 2012 London Olympian Chloe Esposito, said she was looking forward to competing in front of her family and friends in Sydney.
"It’s always great competing in Sydney and to have all the support of my family and friends definitely helps," Esposito said. "Having the opportunity to watch Chloe compete in the Olympics really spurred me on and that is definitely my goal for four years’ time.
"This is my last year as a junior so next year my target is to make all of the senior teams. The Commonwealth Games trials are also next year so I want to be shooting well to qualify for that team."
Esposito will be Australia’s sole competitor in both the women’s 10m air pistol and the 25m pistol.
Joining Esposito in the Australian team is 17-year-old Edwin Gouw, who has already tasted senior world cup action over the past two seasons.
The talented rifle shooter, who is currently based in Singapore, joins Nicholas Ioakim in the field for the men’s 10m air rifle.
The shooting will be held at the Sydney International Shooting Centre, home of the 2000 Sydney Olympic Games. Competition will take place from January 17-19 with over 70 athletes from nine different countries. Spectating is free. For more information go to the AYOF website here>>>
