(ATR) Stormy weather dealt a blow to the first day of competition at the World Baseball Softball Confederation Women’s Baseball World Cup in Viera, Florida.

After opening games in the morning sun were completed without a hitch, two afternoon games were hit with weather delays due to lightning and eventually a rainstorm.

The game between Hong Kong and Canada went only to four innings, with Canada declared the winner, up 4-0. But the game between Australia and Cuba will be continued Thursday from the fourth inning with Australia leading 5-4.

The storm led to cancellation of the opening ceremony for the tournament. But the weather subsided in time for the two evening games. South Korea edged Netherlands 9-8, host USA crushed Puerto Rico 14-0.

Defending champion Japan and Chinese Taipei were the other winners in the first day of group play which runs through August 26.

Theknockout stage opens August 28 with the final set for August 31.

It’s the eighth edition of the Women’s Baseball World Cup, hosted for the first time in the U.S. which won the first two tournaments in 2004 and 2006. Japan has dominated since then, taking the last five championships.

The venue is the USSSA Space Coast Stadium located 20 miles south of the Kennedy Space Center. Should the weather as well as technology cooperate, a rocket launch is scheduled for August 25 during the middle of the two afternoon games.

All games are streamed live at the YouTube channel for the WBSC.

Thursday opens with the conclusion of the Australia-Cuba match, followed by six games split between the two baseball diamonds at the sports complex.

Weather could be a factor each afternoon with the possibility of thunderstorms looming, regular occurrences in the Central Florida summer.
