(ATR) Organizers of the Lima 2019 Pan American Games tell Around the Rings the first stone of the Pan American Village will be laid on Sept. 13.
Construction consortium Besco-Besalco of Chile was awarded the construction tender on Sept. 4, defeating six other companies that were shortlisted on Aug. 7.
ATR is told that work has been underway at the village site since April to fill the land but that full-scale construction operations will begin immediately once the first stone is laid.
The Lima 2019 Organizing Committee (COPAL) says Besco-Besalco was chosen due to its cost-effective proposal and commitment to deliver the village by February 2019, a date COPAL chief Carlos Neuhaus outlined to ATR as the expected completion date. While the 17-month construction time frame is a concern for Neuhaus and PanamSports leaders alike, the Lima 2019 president is confident in its completion.
"I'm worried too, if not, we would not be working with the intensity that we are, but I think we have the situation under control," Neuhaus told ATR in an exclusive interview following his presentation to PanamSports leaders in Miami. "I will stop worrying about it the day of the Games."
In a statement, Neuhaus says Besco-Besalco’s ability to deliver apartment complexes on time across South America was the biggest positive for their bid.
"Their track-record of delivering apartment complexes on time and on budget in Peru, and their commitment to completing the Village by February 2019 was a major factor in our the selection process," Neuhaus said.
That track record includes delivering more than 8,500 apartment complexes across Peru.
The construction is a turnkey project for the company, meaning the firm will fully design, construct and equip the village. The estimated cost of the village is $106 million. The Pan Am Village will consist of seven apartment towers and 1,064 units.
The village is one of eight construction projects that Lima 2019 opened to the tender process on June 19. The "Infrastructure Program Event for the Lima 2019 XVIII Pan American Games and Sixth Parapan American Games" attracted more than 400 companies.
The other projects include the Villa Maria del Triunfo Sports Center, National Sports Village (VIDENA), Callao’s Regional Village, San Juan de Miraflores, High Performance Surf Center in Punta Rocas, Army Equitation School in La Molina and Shooting Range in Las Palmas, Surco.
"Through hard work and collaboration with the UK team, we have completed a major milestone in preparations towards delivering the right Games for Peru and for PanamSports: high-quality, but affordable and efficient," Neuhaus said. "Furthermore, we are making great progress in the procurement of other infrastructure projects which we will be announcing soon."
Time to complete all of these major projects is dwindling with the Lima 2019 Pan Am and Parapan Am Games scheduled for July 26 to Aug. 11 and Aug. 23 to Sep. 1, respectively.
