(ATR) More than 20 years after the Atlanta Olympics, those Games remain a major source of memorabilia for Olympic collectors.
There was plenty of it on display in Atlanta last weekend at the annual show staged by Olympin, the U.S. club for collectors.
About 50 exhibitors took tables in a ballroom at the Omni Hotel in downtown Atlanta for the three day show. Most came from the U.S. but collectors from Italy, Germany, China and Russia added a cosmopolitan touch.
Atlanta memorabilia was predominant with pins by the thousands. Those Games seem to represent a peak in pin production, with markedly fewer produced for subsequent Olympics.
High end items included torchesand ephemera such as autographs or medals.
While pleased with the take up of tables by exhibitors, Olympin organizers said walk-in traffic was lower than expected. For local collectors, the show may not have been a big deal as there’s already a monthly gathering of Olympic collectors that’s met continuously since the end of the 1996 Games.
Last year Lake Placid hosted the show. Next year the club hopes to associate with The National Sports Collectors Convention in Chicago in late July, an event that attracts tens of thousands of memorabilia fans.
