IOC member and athletics legend Hicham El Guerrouj visited the Olympic Park in London today and was impressed with what he saw.
He said: "I was surprised, impressed, and delighted by what I saw and want to congratulate everyone involved in the project for their passion and hard work. Back in Singapore in 2005 when London was a bidding city it went to present its plans for the Games to the IOC. Back then it was a just a dream, some ideas. Today, it is a reality. I am looking at superb modern venues, a beautiful Park set in green space. The venues are modern and belong to the 21st century, they will be the best.
"I am convinced that the London 2012 Games will be an amazing historical event. My message for all the athletes who will come here is to celebrate the Games and the history, everything has been laid on for young people, and it is a chance for athletes to be part of a dream and Olympic history."
Seb Coe, Chair of the London Organising Committee said: "Hicham El Guerrouj is one of the world’s great athletes, who set new standards on the track and is a true sporting leader in Africa and beyond.
"London 2012 always pledged that sport and athletes would be at the heart of our Games, so I am delighted that the Olympic Stadium and the Park gets his seal of approval.
"He knows more than most about the standard of venues that elite athletes require and this gives me great confidence that when London welcomes the world in 2012 we will stage truly memorable Games."
El Guerrouj, is a former middle distance runner from Morocco and has had a distinguished career. He is the current holder of the 1500 metres, mile and outdoor 2000 metres world records, as well as a being a double Olympic gold medallist in Athens in 2004.
