Athletes from a record 64 Nations to compete in Saransk

Large crowds are expected to greet race walkers from a record 64 Member Federations of the IAAF who will compete at the IAAF World Race Walking Cup, Saransk, Russia, Saturday 12 and Sunday 13 May 2012.

Previously the largest gathering in the 24 edition history of the competition was registered in the Spanish city of La Coruna where 58 countries took part in the 2006 edition.

The capital of the Republic of Mordova, Saransk is the second Russian city to play host to the IAAF World Race Walking Cup after Cheboksary held the 2008 edition attended by 53 Member Federations.

The 2km loop road course around which the five races of the IAAF World Race Walking Cup will be contested (men’s 50km, men’s and women’s 20km and junior men’s and women’s 10km races) is situated in the heart of the city. It is essentially a flat course with a slight climb from South to North.

64 nations have entered a total of 478 athletes to compete this coming weekend, a figure which is composed of 312 Male athletes and 166 Female athletes. 22 full teams have entered the men’s 10km and 20km races with 17 teams competing in the men’s 50km. In the women’s races, 18 full teams will contest the junior race with 19 teams in the women’s 20km senior race.
