(ATR) - One of Greece's indelible symbols, the olive tree, already part of the logo for the Athens Games is also the inspiration for the torch to be used in the relay for 2004. Unveiled in a ceremony today at ATHOC headquarters, the torch follows the contour of an olive leaf with a handle made of olive wood. Magnesium is the other material used in the design.
The torch is the creation of industrial designer Adreas Varotsos, a native Athenian.
On hand for the unveiling was IOC President Jacques Rogge who has spent three days visiting the city or an update on preparation for the Games.
The Olympic torch will be used in the worldwide relay being planned for 2004. For the first time the relay will visit Africa and South America, while other stops in Asia, Australia, North America and Europe will commemorate past Olympic Games host cities. The relay will come to an end August 13, 2004 during the Opening Ceremony for the Athens Games.
