(ATR) The Olympic Games will open in Athens later today.
Thousands of spectators gathered near the Acropolis late on Thursday to cheer the arrival of the Olympic flame where a caldron will burn overnight at the ancient site overlooking Athens.
Olympic gold medalist Carl Lewis handed the Olympic torch to Greek high jumper Niki Bakogianni, who had the honor of lighting the caldron.
Later today the Olympic Torch Relay will travel its final legs through the streets of Athens, arriving at the Olympic Stadium in northern Athens for tonight?s opening ceremony.
The identity of the final torchbearer is still unknown, perhaps one of the few secrets about the ceremony that has not been revealed in press leaks during the past few weeks.
