
(ATR) China wins the first gold medal of the 6th Asian Winter Games in Changchun, China, while Kazakhstan scores 52 goals in a preliminary hockey match. The Winter Asian Games, which feature 1,110 athletes from 45 nations, will be the biggest multi-sport competition for 2007 involving Olympic-level winter sports. The games close on Feb 4. The mayor thanked Fok for Hong Kongs help with the Changchun games, while, Fok expressed the hope of getting advice for his citys preparation to host the East Asian Games in 2009. With host China at the top of the medal table, Japan is seccond, followed by Korea and Kazakhstan. The busiest day comes on Jan. 31, with twelve medal events. A total of 147 medals will be awarded at the games. Favored to win the gold medal, the Kazakhstan hockey team won a preliminary match Monday over Thailand, 52-1. The major partners for the Changchun games are two telecommunications companies, China Netcom and China Unicom, and Japanese sporting goods manufacturer Mizuno.
