(ATR) Leaders from Japan, South Korea and China met on Sunday, Dec. 20 to discuss an action plan to promote cultural exchange ahead of a series of Olympics hosted by the countries.

Once the Rio 2016 Games conclude in August, the next three Olympic Games will be held in Asia, beginning with the PyeongChang 2018 Winter Olympics in South Korea. Tokyo, Japan will host the Games in the summer of 2020 while Beijing, China will host the 2022 Winter Olympics, becoming the first city to ever host both the Summer and Winter Games.

The three host countries are capitalizing on this rare opportunity by creating an action plan for deepening cultural exchange, particularly among youths.

The plan calls for more exchange with the Association of Southeast Asian Nations, a group of 10 countries including Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam.

Japan’s senior vice minister for education, culture, sports, science and technology Hiroyuki Yoshiie agreed to the action plan with Luo Shugang and Kim Jong-deok, the culture ministers of China and South Korea at the meeting in Qingdao, China.

The three countries also agreed to hold discussions regarding sports at a meeting next May in Seoul, South Korea.
