(ATR) China enters the final week of competition in Guangzhou with more gold medals than every other country combined.
The host finished Friday with 126 golds, well on pace to beat its previous record haul of 183 golds in Beijing 20 years ago.South Korea remains a distant second with 43 but stretched its lead over third-place Japan, who has 24.
Judoka Tests Positive
Shokir Muminov bears the unfortunate distinction of Guangzhou 2010’s first doping violation.
The Uzbekistani judoka won silver Sunday in men’s 81kg but was stripped of the medal Friday after testing positive for the banned stimulant Methylhexaneamine.
"The athlete has been disqualified from the competition as well as these Games, and his performance in the competition has been nullified, his medal withdrawn and appropriate adjustment made to the results," the Olympic Council of Asia’s medical chair Mani Jegathesan said Friday in a statement.
"These findings will now be forwarded to the athlete's national authorities, the International Federation of the sport concerned and the World Anti-Doping Agency for further action on their part."
Methylhexaneamine was responsible for two of the five doping violations at last month’s Commonwealth Games. Nigerian sprinters Osayomi Oludamola and Samuel Okon each tested positive for the drug in Delhi.
Competition Review
Saturday brings the final day of the golf competition with South Korea set for a clean sweep. Meen Whee Kim is six shots clear in the men’s event ahead of the final round. His compatriot Hyun Soo Kim has an even bigger lead in the women’s event,eight shots clear of fellow Korean Jung Eun Han.
India claimed only its second gold medal of the Asian Games in Guangzhou, as rowing star Bajrang Lal Takhar triumphed in the men’s single sculls.
The 29-year-old silver medalist from Doha four years ago went one better with a comfortable win. The race also brought Iraq its first medal of the Games, with Haieder Hamarsheid claiming the bronze.
But it was China who dominated the rowing with four more golds on the final day. That gave the hosts a total of ten successes in the 14 events, including the men’s eight.
Athletes from Kuwait secured their first gold medals of the Games in the men’s trap shooting, taking the team gold as well as individual success for Naser Meqlad.
Pakistan collected a first Asian Games gold medal since Busan eight years ago, beating Bangladesh in the final of the women’s cricket. For Bangladesh, the silver was the first medal of the Guangzhou Games.
In the 500m Dragon Boat race, Indonesia took the gold in the men’s, and China won the women’s event.
Hong Kong’s Steven Wong won his country’s fifth gold medal in the men’s BMX, thanking his girlfriend for her support.
South Korea took gold in baseball, beating Chinese Taipei 9-3 to become potentially the last Asian Gameswinnersfor an event that so far is not on the program for Incheon in 2014.
