The No. 1 source for news of the Olympic Movement now has its first managing editor in nearly 30 years.
Around The Rings (ATR) Editor and Founder Ed Hula announced Wednesday the promotion of Gerard Farek from content editor to managing editor, effective immediately -- in effect, passing the torch of daily operations to a trusted colleague with deep Olympic reporting experience.
"Since joining our team in 2016, Gerard has been an integral part of our daily operation. He has represented ATR at events around the world from the Rio Olympics to the Pan Am Games. His knowledge of international sports across two decades of journalism is the kind of experience that bolsters the quality of Around the Rings," said Ed Hula.
Farek will oversee daily operations for ATR. This includes a team in Atlanta as well as correspondents based in Europe, Japan, Australia, Canada, and South America. Both Ed Hula and Publisher Sheila S. Hula cited Farek’s deep knowledge of the Olympic Movement, sports federations, athletes, sponsors and media as part of their decision to pass the torch.
"Gerard has been a valued member of our team for nearly five years," said Sheila S. Hula. "His knowledge of sport business and his steady hand on the helm are certain to help Around the Rings to grow even more."
Just before the COVID-19 pandemic, ATR operations transitioned to a virtual office with team members working from home. Farek mentioned the global challenges in the context of his new ATR role.
"I’m excited about the new responsibilities and look forward to new opportunities emerging from the pandemic crisis," said Farek. "In these uncertain times, I am certain that Around the Rings will continue to provide quality news and information on the Olympic Movement."
Farek joined ATR as content editor in 2016. He gained his expertise in sports business reporting and content creation during 19 years with CNN, where he was a supervising producer in charge of international sports coverage. He produced and reported for CNN at Athens 2004, Torino 2006 and Beijing 2008.
At CNN Farek also managed creation and production for CNN International’s "World Sport" program.
This included numerous Olympic-centric segments and coverage of FIFA World Cup and other major international championship events. Since joining ATR, Farek reported from several Olympic trial events as well as Rio 2016, PyeongChang 2018 and Lima 2019. He also enjoyed an ATR assignment that took him to a remote part of the North Atlantic.
"On a personal level, it would be wonderful to travel a bit again and talk with people face to face rather than online, and I wouldn’t mind a return trip to the Faroe Islands," said Farek.
Farek earned bachelor’s degrees in journalism and international government from the University of Texas at Austin. He resides in Atlanta, Ga.
