(ATR) Thursday's top finishers at the Youth Olympic Games are forced to wait a day to get their medals due to the discovery of an aerial bomb from World War II at Innsbruck’s Bozner Platz.
The aerial bomb, which weighs about 250 kilograms, was discovered during afternoon work on sewage pipes under Brixner Strasse at about 2:45 p.m.
Anti-bomb squad members from Linz arrived on the scene around 6 p.m. and defused the bomb.
Concerts at the nearby medal plaza featuring Tanz Baby! and Kommando Elefant will proceed as scheduled at 8 p.m.
Bozner Platz, where Rudolph’s Fountain landmark is located, is about 400 meters from both the city’s train station and the medals plaza on Maria Theresien Strasse, which runs perpendicular to Brixner Strasse.
About eight streets in the area with residences and shops, which were closed in the afternoon, were re-opened by police following diffusion of the bomb.
Hundreds of inhabitants and merchants had been forced to evacuate the area.
Approximately 50 Innsbruck police arrived on the scene following the discovery this afternoon.
Over the past 20 years, 10 similar bombs have been found in Innsbruck.
