(ATR) The leader of the Association of National Olympic Committees from Africa Lassana Palenfo will not seek re-election, Around the Rings can confirm.
ANOCA held an Extraordinary General Assembly today in Algiers, Algeria to set a date for new elections. Elections will be held during an ANOCA General Assembly set for the sidelines of the Association of National Olympic Committees General Assembly this November in Tokyo.
A spokesperson for Palenfo confirmed to ATR the three-term leader would not seek re-election. Palenfo originally won a fourth mandate to lead ANOCA at the 2017 General Assembly in a controversial election.
The assembly was held in Djibouti, where the ANOCA Executive Committee barred challenger Hamad Kalkaba Malboum from running citing evidence of government funds used for his campaign. Malboum vowed to challenge the decision in the Court of Arbitration for Sport.
Following the assembly, the IOC member from Djibouti Aicha Garad Ali wrote to the heads of all African NOCs calling for an extraordinary meeting on the sidelines of the 2017 ANOC General Assembly. Ali’s letter says that the General Assembly in Djibouti was not given full information about the decision to bar Malboum.
At the 2017 ANOC General Assembly last November, ANOCA met and decided that Palenfo would step down from running day to day operations of the organization. A three person commission led by IOC member from South Africa Sam Ramsamy was appointed to review the statutes and bylaws of ANOCA.
CAS eventually upheld Malboum’s appeal against the election in a ruling in late May. The decision also annulled the elections in Djibouti and called for new ones.
It is unclear what has happened with the Ramsamy commission, as requests for comment were not immediately returned.
The Extraordinary Assembly in Algiers also discussed the host for the 2019 African Games. Reportedly only Morocco and Nigeria are being considered favorites to land the event, which was scheduled for Equatorial Guinea at one point.
According to a spokesperson for Palenfo "a commission has moved [to Morocco] and will have an answer in the coming days" about the country’s ability to host.
Nigeria is also bidding for the 2023 Youth Olympic Games along with Botswana and Senegal.
