Anne Hidalgo visited today in Tokyo two sites that will host the aquatic events for the Olympic and Paralympic Games in 2020. The Mayor of Paris reaffirmed on this occasion its desire to consolidate the links between the project and the Tokyo bid Paris 2024 particularly in the area of clean transportation.
Paris and Tokyo have been linked since 1982 by a treaty of friendship and cooperation. It results in many partnerships between the two cities in the fields of environment, culture, sport, urban development or tourism. A year after a successful first trip to Japan, Anne Hidalgo is back in Tokyo this week.
Monday, she was greeted by Yuriko Koike, the first female Governor of Tokyo, elected a few months ago. This meeting served to strengthen ties between the Olympic and Paralympic Games 2020 to be held in the Japanese capital, and the candidacy of Paris 2024. Both elected shared their best practices in terms of reception of major sporting events and worked to build bridges between the Tokyo project and the Parisian project.
Their visions come together especially in the field of transport. "Paris and Tokyo have the same desire to develop clean and collective mobility. Having an efficient network of subway and bus is essential for us to host the Games. This is the guarantee for athletes and visitors to circulate quickly and with a high level of comfort, "explained the Mayor of Paris.
"In ten years, Tokyo has eradicated successfully diesel. Paris wants to be inspired and to build on this positive experience. Improve air quality and protect the environment at the heart of the Agenda 2020 IOC. It is also a concrete legacy of the Games for residents, health and living environment, "she added.
After his meeting with the Governor, Anne Hidalgo went to the site of the Olympic Aquatics Centre and the Tatsumi International Swimming Center, two Olympic venues that will host 2020 aquatic events.
The Olympic Aquatics Centre, currently under construction, will be devoted to events in synchronized swimming and diving. The galleries gather 20,000 spectators, which is the largest capacity of an Olympic aquatic center.
