The Foundation for Global Sports Development (GSD) will recognize Anita DeFrantz and her contributions to the sporting community with their prestigious Humanitarian Award. The award ceremony will be held at the Grand Hyatt Rio de Janeiro on August 6th, featuring a memorable sequence of events and speakers including IOC Vice President, John Coates. In addition to the award, GSD will be presenting DeFrantz with a $100,000 grant to further her charitable efforts.
The Foundation for Global Sports Development established the Humanitarian Award in 2010 in an effort to recognize individuals and organizations that work to preserve the values of fair play, sportsmanship and drug-free competition in the world of sports. Recipients of this award exhibit the highest level of dedication to the Olympic movement and promoting a positive culture of
sport.
Throughout her life, Anita DeFrantz has broken down barriers in sport and paved the way for youth to enter a sporting community where the rights and health of athletes are at the center of focus. "Time and time again, when we see something positive happening within the Olympic and Southern California sporting community, we find Anita DeFrantz at the center of it," says Steven Ungerleider, GSD executive board member. "She gives of herself without asking for anything in return."
"Anita DeFrantz is a true ambassador for positive sport," added GSD executive board member, David Ulich. "Thru her lifelong work with nonprofit and youth organizations, she has truly mastered the art of using sports as a way to promote those values that are important to the
mission of GSD, including teamwork, fair play, sportsmanship and participation for all. We are proud to honor Anita with the Humanitarian Award."
